Bio

Morbid Orchid is a duo writing and releasing tunes straight outta Nashville, TN. Joel Murray sings and plays drums, and Taylor Santangelo plays the guitar.

After a few failed attempts and one dick pic, Taylor almost deleted a Craiglist ad he posted in the hopes of finding bandmates. As a last-ditch effort, he said to himself, “just one more week.” Endurance paid off when another guy named Joel responded, “hey, I live 20 minutes away.” The two would soon meet, and find the chemistry between them to be nothing short of palpable.

Fast forward one cat statue, seven tunes, and a very odd 2020: the duo decided it was time to release their first record, Siamese TV Lamp.

ALBUM MESSAGE

Siamese TV Lamp blends hope and nostalgia in the same way it blends fuzzed-out guitar with smooth pop melodies. Songs about abandoned childhood dreams and coping with anxiety commingle comfortably with songs about sun-drenched first loves and night-blooming orchids. This eclectic cohesion reflects Morbid Orchid's creative ethos both sonically and lyrically. Furthermore, the tracks on Siamese TV Lamp were produced to blend into each other seamlessly, making the album feel like a complete creative statement.

CREATIVE PROCESS

Joel and Taylor wrote Siamese TV Lamp together, practicing endlessly in the spare room above Joel's garage, pushing each other until they both were satisfied creatively. When it came time to record, Tom Whall - tour drummer, songwriter, and Joel's college friend - engineered, mixed, mastered, and played bass on the album.

They had so much fun experimenting together, from surfing radio bands to find the perfect static weirdness to immediately scrapping low-tom jungle beats. Joel's wife Loee sang harmony on three songs as well.

QUOTES

“I've never been this challenged in a creative collaboration, and I think the amount of care we both poured into these songs is reflected in the final product. I'm so proud of this record and the creative partnership we forged.” - Joel

"We’re rather different in our approaches to song making, but I think that makes us an interesting pair. Joel helped to pull me from a creative dormancy, and has become an important person in my life. I love our little record and can’t wait to see what’s next!" - Taylor
